The Hardest Easy Task
The hardest part of writing is sitting down to do it. The second is actually writing once I have sat down to write.
I sit down to write and realize that I have forgotten something to drink. If I don’t have something, I will just be getting up in 10 minute to get it so I might as well do it before I start. Don’t want it to interrupt a moment of flow. I also need my lap blanket. Oh, and a snack.
But look! I should check for that email I’ve been waiting for while I’m here. Instagram is showing me notifications, I should engage with my friends and followers. It’s an important element to building my platform as a writer. Right?
Okay. Time to write. But I am feeling a bit tired now. And it is already much later than I intended. Perhaps I should start tomorrow when I am feeling fresher. I just need to relax, get some of the stress off my shoulders, then I can focus.Tomorrow it is.
Every. Day.
Because even though writing can be joyful, exciting, fun, enthralling, it can also be challenging, frustrating, and disappointing.
These are the things I am trying to help me overcome Writer’s Avoidance:
- Schedule a time to write. Preferably, schedule a time every day and put it in my planner.
- Set a timer 30 minutes before to clear notifications flags on apps, and then at time to start to open up Forest and start my timer.
- Sit butt in chair at time. Do not open browser tabs.
- Create Sticker system: stickers work on me as well as they work on children to encourage good behavior 😉
- Be honest with my writer friends, and ask them for accountability. Sometimes, I need to be called on my stuff.
- Ask friends and family to honor my writing time. They support me, so they won’t get angry or sad if I ask for the time I need to achieve my dream.
I am starting this today, so I will let you know how it goes. Hopefully I will see an increase in productivity, or at the very least more days with words than without. Wish me luck 🙂
